The journey was difficult, but the emotional burden was even greater. Fear of being recognized by neighbors and the stigma associated with HIV often made her consider giving up treatment altogether.

For years, Nakimuli lived in silence. She rarely attended community meetings, avoided social gatherings, and struggled to provide for her children after losing her small source of income. She believed that living with HIV meant her dreams—and those of her family—had come to an end.

Everything began to change when REACH-INITIATIVE UGANDA launched a community HIV awareness and support program in her village. During a door-to-door outreach, trained community health workers visited Nakimuli’s home, offering counseling, encouragement, and accurate information about HIV treatment and positive living. They assured her that she was not alone and connected her to a local peer support group.

Through regular follow-up visits, treatment adherence counseling, and psychosocial support, Nakimuli regained confidence. She faithfully attended her clinic appointments, took her antiretroviral medication as prescribed, and gradually regained her strength. The support group became a place where she could openly share her experiences, learn from others, and build lasting friendships.

Recognizing the challenges faced by vulnerable households, REACH-INITIATIVE UGANDA also linked Nakimuli to a village savings and loans association and provided training in basic financial management and small business development. With a small loan from the group, she started selling fresh vegetables and household groceries in her community. The business steadily grew, allowing her to pay school fees, improve her family’s nutrition, and create a safer home for her children.

Today, Nakimuli has become a respected community advocate. She speaks openly during village dialogues, encouraging others to know their HIV status, begin treatment early, and reject stigma and discrimination. Her testimony has inspired many people to seek HIV testing and remain committed to treatment.

Nakimuli’s journey is a reminder that hope can be restored when communities come together with compassion, accurate information, and quality health services. Through integrated HIV prevention, treatment support, community mobilization, and household empowerment, REACH-INITIATIVE UGANDA continues to transform lives across Mpigi District—helping individuals and families move from fear and isolation to health, dignity, and renewed hope..

Title: Nakimuli’s Walk to Hope – Mpigi Every morning before sunrise, Nakimuli, a 34-year-old mother of four from Mpigi District, began the long walk to the nearest health facility to collect her HIV medication.
